Aftermarket by default, OEM on request — what you actually get

The honest framing: most drivers don't need OEM glass to get a safe, properly fitted replacement, and almost no insurance company pays for OEM without a fight. What matters is that the glass meets AGRSS (Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standards) and that it's sourced from a reputable manufacturer — not that it carries the automaker's stamp on the corner. Here is the breakdown, no upsell.

OE-equivalent aftermarket glass is what we install by default — it's the glass on roughly 95% of our jobs. It is made by companies like Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, Fuyao, and PGW — the same tier-1 suppliers that supply OEM windshields to the automakers. The glass meets or exceeds AGRSS standards, uses the same urethane-compatible bonding surface, and produces comparable optical clarity. The difference from OEM is usually a minor optical distortion specification inside AGRSS tolerances, not a safety issue.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) glass is made by the same manufacturer that supplied the windshield on the assembly line — often with the automaker's logo. It is the closest match to the original in optical clarity, fit, and acoustic properties. Insurance rarely covers OEM unless you have a specific rider or state law that requires it. OEM runs typically 20–40% more in the part than OE-equivalent aftermarket. We install OEM on request or when your insurer requires it — and we explain the upcharge before any work starts.

Why we default to aftermarket: it meets OEM specs and meets the AGRSS safety bar the federal government and every major insurer recognizes. The small optical-distortion difference does not affect fit, ADAS camera targets, or adhesion. If you specifically want OEM, we install OEM — just ask.

ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement

If your vehicle was made after 2018, it almost certainly has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control. These systems rely on a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield. After a new windshield goes on, that camera must be recalibrated to factory spec. Without calibration, the systems may not trigger, may trigger falsely, or may trigger at the wrong distance — and that defeats the entire reason they're there.

Static calibration happens in our shop. The vehicle is set up on a level surface with manufacturer-specific target boards at measured distances. The camera is mechanically retaught to recognize those targets.

Dynamic calibration is a controlled drive cycle. The vehicle is driven at specified speeds while the camera re-aligns itself to road markings and lane lines. Some vehicles need both — we tell you up front.

Who can do it matters. Many shops subcontract calibration to a dealer or skip it entirely. We own the targets, the scan tools, and the procedure — and we verify the calibration before you drive away. This is not an upsell. It's a required step, and we include it in every job on a camera-equipped vehicle.

Your right to choose your shop (Virginia HB312 / VA Code § 38.2-510)

Virginia has explicit anti-steering law on the books. Under VA Code § 38.2-510 (often referenced with HB312 / similar consumer-rights legislation), your insurance company cannot force you to use a specific shop. If your carrier tries to push you to Safelite, Glass Doctor, or their own in-house glass program after a claim, they are out of line.

What that means for you practically: You are entitled to choose any AGSC-certified shop, including Legendary Auto Glass. Your coverage follows you to the shop of your choice. Your carrier must work with the shop you pick. If your carrier tells you otherwise, cite § 38.2-510 — and call us. We work with every major Virginia carrier and meet every certification requirement they have. We've taken on Geico, State Farm, Progressive, USAA, Erie, Allstate, Nationwide, and a dozen regional carriers — all direct.

Common questions about windshield replacement

Rock-chip repairs typically take about 30 minutes. Windshield replacements without ADAS calibration take 90 minutes to 2 hours from setup to cure time. If your vehicle requires ADAS camera recalibration after the install — most 2018+ vehicles do — plan 3 to 4 hours total. You drive away the same day. We confirm the timing for your specific vehicle before any work begins and never leave you waiting overnight.
In most cases, yes. Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers windshield replacement at $0 deductible on the glass line item, or with a low glass-only deductible that is separate from your collision deductible. Geico, State Farm, Progressive, USAA, Erie, Allstate, and Nationwide all offer full-glass endorsements in Virginia. Comprehensive claims do not affect your rates the way at-fault collision claims do, so using your coverage does not raise your premium at renewal. We verify your coverage before any work begins and handle the claim directly — you pay your deductible only if one applies.
Pricing depends on your vehicle's year, make, model, body style, and the features built into the glass (rain sensor, ADAS camera, heated wiper park, acoustic layer, heads-up display). Most windshield replacements at Legendary run $250 to $600 for the glass itself, plus ADAS calibration if your vehicle has a forward-facing camera ($300 dynamic, $320–$350 static, $600+ for dual). Under a comprehensive insurance claim with a $0 glass endorsement — what most Virginia drivers have — your out-of-pocket cost is $0. We give you the firm price before any work starts, with all line items on a single invoice.
If your vehicle was made after 2018, it almost certainly needs it. The forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield powers lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. After a new windshield goes on, that camera must be recalibrated to factory spec — without recalibration those systems may not trigger, may trigger falsely, or may trigger at the wrong distance. We perform both static and dynamic calibration in-house, verify the result, and provide the post-calibration report. We never subcontract calibration to a dealer.
OE-equivalent aftermarket glass that meets OEM specs is what we install by default — it is what roughly 95% of our customers receive. It is made by the same tier-1 suppliers (Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, Fuyao, PGW) that supply the automakers, sold without the brand stamp, and meets AGRSS safety standards. OEM glass is made by the same manufacturer that supplied the windshield on the assembly line, often with the automaker's logo. Both meet AGRSS. The difference is usually minor optical distortion in the marginal spec band, not safety or fit. Insurance rarely covers the OEM upcharge unless state law or a specific rider applies. We install OEM on request or when your insurer requires it — and we tell you the cost before any work starts.
Lifetime warranty on every installation, for as long as you own the vehicle. No fine print, no expiration date, no exclusions. The warranty covers labor, glass, and seal — if the windshield ever fails because of workmanship or adhesive failure, we replace it free. We also verify every part against your vehicle's exact specifications (year, make, model, body style) before installation so the part fits and the camera sees through it properly.

Virginia auto glass law

Virginia's HB312/SB767 law requires every glass shop to disclose ADAS calibration needs in writing before windshield replacement. Here's what drivers should know.
