Safe drive-away clearance
Wait for your installer to confirm that your vehicle is cleared to drive. Safe drive-away time is the minimum wait before the vehicle can be driven; it is not the same as full adhesive cure. The time depends on the adhesive product and installation conditions. Sika’s published guidance lists different minimum times for different products and temperature ranges, and the Auto Glass Safety Council explains that adhesive type and atmospheric conditions affect the time. There is no single wait that applies to every installation. Ask your installer for the safe-drive-away time for your vehicle and the adhesive used, based on current manufacturer instructions and the conditions during your installation.
Leave temporary tape and trim alone
If the installer applied temporary tape, leave it in place for the period they specify. Do not pull it off early, press on the glass to test the bond, or adjust the molding yourself. Ask the installer when to remove the tape and whether any other care steps apply to your installation.
Be gentle with doors, windows, and washing
Close doors gently and avoid slamming them while the new bond is settling. Follow your installer’s directions about whether to leave a side window slightly open and when it is safe to wash the vehicle. Until then, avoid automatic car washes, pressure washers, and strong spray aimed at the windshield edges. If your care sheet does not say when washing is appropriate, call the installer before washing.
When to call the installer
Contact the shop promptly if you notice water entering around the glass, unusual wind noise, a loose or visibly misaligned molding, or any movement in the windshield. Do not try to reseal or push the glass into place. If the glass appears loose, park safely and call the installer before driving further.
ADAS and vehicle-specific instructions
If your vehicle has a windshield camera or other driver-assistance sensor, ask whether calibration was required and, if so, confirm it was completed. Contact the installer if a warning light remains on or a driver-assistance feature behaves differently after the replacement. For vehicle-specific directions and warning messages, use the owner’s manual for your exact year, make, and model; GM’s Manuals and Guides page is one example of an automaker’s manual lookup. Your installer should also provide the care sheet and safe-drive-away instructions for this particular installation.
